Nitrolong 2.6 Tablet CR contains Nitroglycerin, a nitrate vasodilator engineered for the controlled-release (CR) management of stable angina pectoris. By promoting the release of nitric oxide in vascular smooth muscle, it induces systemic venodilation and arterial relaxation. This action reduces both venous return to the heart (preload) and systemic vascular resistance (afterload), thereby significantly decreasing myocardial oxygen consumption and improving coronary perfusion. The CR formulation ensures a sustained therapeutic effect, providing long-term prophylaxis against angina episodes in patients with coronary artery disease and improving physical exercise tolerance by balancing myocardial oxygen supply and demand. Understanding the mechanism of action
Possible side effects and reactions
Nitrolong 2.6 Tablet CR (Controlled Release Nitroglycerin) is a prescription nitrate medication used to prevent and treat chest pain (angina). By relaxing and widening blood vessels, it can commonly cause side effects related to blood pressure changes:
Nitrate-induced headaches: Throbbing or mild-to-moderate headaches, which are very common as the blood vessels in the head adjust to the medication.
Vasodilation effects: Dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing (warmth or redness in the face and neck), or a temporary drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up quickly.
Mild gastrointestinal effects: Mild nausea or restlessness.
Severe allergic reaction: Intense itching, widespread rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Serious or emergent adverse effects: Severe, persistent dizziness, fainting, extremely low blood pressure, a dangerously slow or fast heart rate, or a worsening chest pain attack that does not resolve with sublingual rescue medication as directed by your physician.
Important precautions and warnings
Sudden Hypotension & Dizziness: Nitrolong can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting—especially when standing up quickly. Sit or lie down if you feel dizzy.
Severe Drug Interactions (PDE5 Inhibitors): Never take Nitrolong if you are taking medications for erectile dysfunction (such as sildenafil / Viagra, tadalafil, or vardenafil) or pulmonary hypertension (such as riociguat). Combining nitrates with these drugs can cause a catastrophic, life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Nitrate Tolerance: To prevent your body from building up a tolerance (making the drug less effective over time), your doctor may recommend a daily "nitrate-free interval" (a specific window of time each day when no medicine is taken). Follow this schedule carefully.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
